What Is Pilates?

Updated: Jan 2

What if I told you it was life changing?

Pilates is a system of strength based exercises that also target flexibility at the same time. Using resistance training you will move your body with precision to precisely target areas of your body you never knew existed. This unique approach to movement challenges both the body and the mind to create a deeper strength. It is not soft or fluffy....

"The mind, when housed within a healthful body, possesses a glorious sense of power.” Joseph Pilates

Joseph Hubertus Pilates created his system and his apparatus in the early 20th century, it became popular with sports professionals, dancers and actors, as well as the everyday person. The repertoire is vast and spans a multitude of apparatus, from Matwork, Reformer, Wunda chair and more. His philosophy is what sets it apart from other fitness regimes.

Lets take yoga for example I tend to zone out in a class, I drift in and out of thoughts about the day or how I'm feeling, or I just stare into space not thinking at all. But in Pilates I have to stay fully in the moment in every exercise, I have to be precise with my movement, I'm fully present, and you leave the class not only feeling taller but lighter in both body and mind. Your body gets a workout, your brain gets a workout, but so does your soul!

"Realise deeply that the present moment is all you will ever have. Make the NOW the primary focus of your life.” Eckhart Tolle

Pilates is a method. Each piece of apparatus informs or supports the other, you may have come across Matwork in a village hall, but that's only 10% of what Joseph Pilates invented. There's an entirely amazing world of Pilates exercises on the larger apparatus that will truly transform you and help you change your life.

It is great for preventing injuries in your sport, enables you to live pain free and when it is used clinically it can help you rehab after injury, support you following a joint replacement and help you manage life long health conditions like osteoporosis, hypermobility and more.

Pilates is also great for cross training as part of your nutrition and fitness plan. Pilates is known for creating strong and lean looking bodies without bulking, so it is great to help you tone as you work towards your body goals.

Pilates is far more than just an exercise class, it is a movement... are you ready to join?

Pilates is for everyone

If you have tried a class and it seemed too easy, or you did a bit of core work and a lot of stretching and breathing, or the teacher just stayed at the front of the class....come to a class with me, my teaching heritage goes back to Joseph Pilates via 4 generations of other teachers, so you know you'll be getting the kind of workout 'Joe' intended you to have.
